GirlPower
When: Tuesday and Thursday
Partners: YMCA of Springfield, Oakland Presbyterian Church
Focused on helping middle school girls develop a lifestyle of healthy habits, GirlPower's volunteer college students come alongside girls for instruction in exercise and fitness, hands-on learning in cooking and nutrition, and weekly discussions and exercises in everything from conflict resolution and relationships to skin care.
Wise Guys
When: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
Partners: Hayward Middle School, Schaefer Middle School
SCYM helps meet the needs of city schools and junior high boys through WISE GUYS mentoring groups, a public school partnership. Associate Director Tyler Worley spends time regularly on school campuses, facilitating a state funded program which seeks to discourage early fatherhood through education. In addition, Jeff's role helps make the connection for many students to participate in after-school programs SCYM and other organizations offer.
REACH Student Leadership
When: Five weeks in the summer
Partner: YMCA of Springfield
REACH gives 10-15 older middle school and high school kids the opportunity to develop leadership skills through experiential learning, service, team building, and discussion. The program is capped off with a 3-day wilderness experience where students are challenged to use their leadership skills daily.
STARS After-School Programs
When: TUES-THURS (west) and WED (east)
Partners: Westside Christian Community and High Street Church of the Nazarene
Open to city elementary and middle school kids, STARS provides a safe, loving environment with positive, caring Christian adults. Children eat together, receive help with homework, learn about the Bible in fun ways, and try creative arts like sewing and woodworking. Summer Day Camp
When: Four weeks in summertime
Partner: Zion Lutheran Church
West-side elementary school kids meet daily at Zion Lutheran Church for a Summer Day Camp packed with hands-on learning opportunites, field trips, games and activities. Many dedicated volunteers guide children through creative Bible study, hands-on lessons in math, reading and science, drama, arts and crafts, cooking, sports and more. Young Life Clubs
When: Tuesday and Wednesday evenings
Partners: Oakland Presbyterian Church, The Children's Rescue Center
Between two clubs targeting Hayward and Schaefer Middle Schools, SCYM's Young Life clubs impact over 50 students weekly. Students enjoy games and fun relationship-building activities, then break to hear the gospel shared from creation to sin and the cross.
